About Alcorn State University

Alcon State University was founded in 1871, on the site that was originally occupied by Oakland College, which was a `white` school, founded by the Presbyterian Church, closed at the beginning of the Civil War. After having its name changed several times over the years, the current name of Alcorn State University was established in 1974, with the help of Governor William L. Waller, who signed the House Bill 298, granting the university status to Alcorn.
